Saturday Night Reflection

I thought it would be appropriate to consider this comment from Reinhold Niebuhr:

The tendency to claim God as an ally for our partisan value and ends is the source of all religious fanaticism.

It is probably not surprising that over time, people have tried to consider God's will, and tried to align themselves with it as they understand it. It is also not surprising that people would want God on their side, and interpret outcomes in terms of God's favor or opposition.

You may be pleased that there is less and less risk of this phenomenon as many societies become more and more godless. On the other hand given the history of nazism, fascism, socialism, communism, etc... the alternatives offer little hope for the church, peace on earth, or man's relationship with God.
